Life Form

by Jenny Slate

Lifeform by Jenny Slate is a non-fiction collections of essays and letters about Slate’s experience going from singlehood to motherhood.

I ate this book up in a single day, enjoying it’s deliciousness, leaving no crumbs. I was laughing, I was sobbing, I experienced the full range.

Jenny Slate’s writing is like being eaten whole. Like experiencing an alien abduction. Like being dripped upon by the rain coming off building ledges, the kind that trickles all the way down your scalp. Her writing is like walking into a nature preserve. Like sitting in the bliss and fullness at the end of family dinner. Like being hugged and lulled to sleep in a mossy blanket.

There are so many highlights: the relatability of ‘Storm’, the love letter that is ‘On and Off the Island’, the manic experience of ‘The Drive In’, but the absolute climax, ‘Birth Visualization of Stone House’, will go down as the most stunning thing I have read in my life thus far.

If not clear, I love this book. I think everyone should read this out loud to themselves, with great gusto, to get the full enjoyment as I did.
